That thing that goes bump in the night... is my Manuscript

So, a friend on GoodReads broke the news to me today.  There are several other cybernetic-based books coming out in the next two years.

So, what does this tell me?  Either I hurry up and submit my manuscript to jump on the bandwagon - or I already missed the wave.

Either way I'm fucked because I'm chicken-shit.  I feel nauseous even thinking about doing the final edits on my manuscript... let alone submitting it to anyone!

My manuscript is an albatross, noosed around my neck.

It's the thing that goes bump in the night.

Like it's coming in at me from all sides now.

Anybody else know the feeling?

You have a blog! I never even realized! The only book I know of that is cybernetic based is a book called Cinder by Marissa Meyers who I only from writing fan fiction as Alicia Blade. Maybe you will make it onto the caravan!

Love the new video blog format, and totally enjoy your goodreads reviews!

I started writing my MS about Greek mythology (Hades/Persephone) way before Meg Cabot, Aimee Carter, Josephine Angelini, and all the others came out with their books. So now I just look like a copycat. So, yeah, I DO know what you mean. haha

I found your blog from a review on good reads. I love your cool way of blasting all the ironic and obvious writing blunders others continue to give 5 stars to.
About your manuscript...try to get it published anyway. As you said the market is flooded. Why not be one of the few that will be on the wave's crest with good/great writing?
good Luck!

Unless I'm mistaken sci fi books focusing on cybernetics have been in circulation for more than 20 years. I'm sure your book will get the attention it deserves.

I know this was posted a couple months ago, so hopefully you've found some peace about it since then -- but I just had to say, I know exactly how you feel. Not in the contrived way, in the real way. I have beeeeeen there.

Long story made slightly shorter, I've been slaving away, painfully writing my first novel and I really felt like I had an original story to fit in the YA Fantasy world that needed to be told. I was excited and passionate about it. Then, recently, I read an article saying that my topic of choice was predicted to be one of the next "big things". It felt like a slap in the face to my sense of originality - which I tried so very hard to preserve. It made me sick to even think about writing it for a while after that.

But, then I realized what I'm sure you already know judging by your awesome reviews -- even if the TOPIC becomes a "hot thing", that doesn't mean any of those stories will be worth salt. The YA Fantasy world these days, while there are certainly some great gems, is full of authors looking to hop on every bandwagon and mix plots from other books that have already been written, rather than tell an original story that they find interesting. I read about an author who had switched to writing YA Fantasy a few years ago *only because* that's where the money was -- I'd rather work a shitty 9-5 job for the rest of my life than write because that's "where the money is."

Anyway. I'm on a tangent, my apologies. Your reviews on Goodreads are fantastically well written and you have a great grasp on what makes a good book. If you felt positive about your story before finding out others with similar topics were being released, don't let that stop you. Work hard to get it published.

I've been in this situation. Dystopian (i.e. the Matched deal) arose just as I'd completed my dystopian.

It helped me find an agent.

It helped me get attention from editors.

Trust me: all you need is one of these cybernetic stories to be a hit and you'll have the wind at your back.

The people at a disadvantage will be those waiting until agents are demanding cybernetic type stories to start writing one

Assuming it's the next big thing...

People did the wizard school thing several times before J. K. Rowling got it right. Don't worry about the trends; if your ms is good, it will be the ONLY cybernetic story out there :)
